Rain, Wonderful Rain

13 August 2007 · 9 Comments

and… a tea party.

Well, after months of no rain… Sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning, we were drenched, dumped upon, bombarded like cats-and-dogs even. Glorious liquid sunshine! Okay, so the storm came with straight-line winds as high as 70-mph which caused power outages, uprooted trees and turned our neighbor’s trampoline into an incredible flying object. Who’s complaining? Actually, the farmers may be complaining. The rain came too late to save some crops and the corn is all laying down in the field. I am sure it is harder to harvest like that. We are expecting rain again today. If this keeps up, maybe my lawn will turn green!

Thankfully, electricity was quickly restored to my house. Because on Saturday Ron’s mom, uncle and grandmother were coming to our home for lunch. I needed power in the morning to vacuum the cat hair from the chairs in the living room! I had purposely waited to do that job because if it is done too soon, the cats will just sit on the chairs again. Their visit was a huge treat because Ron’s grandmother and uncle live in Tucson. Ron’s grandma doesn’t usually eat much at lunch. So, rather than make a big meal, I decided to serve tea. We had cucumber tea sandwiches, tea sandwiches made with a bologna spread, a salad made with melon, pineapple and seedless red grapes and for dessert Heidi’s Chocolate Chip Cheeseball. Ron’s grandmother could not have been more pleased. She has hot tea every afternoon and loved the cucumber sandwiches.

I was a bit worried about getting Ron’s grandmother into our home. Our main house is one level. We opted for this instead of a split level specifically because of access issues, but you do have to climb up three stairs to get in. In the end, it was Ron’s uncle who fell down the stairs. I told Ron if our family was going to continue to age, we would have to install a ramp.

and… a baby shower.

Yesterday, I went to my cousin’s baby shower in the cities. I had a fabulous time. All those years of tramping around the US with the Army… I missed bridal showers, baby showers, weddings, births, deaths… So, even if it was a bit of a drive, Marissa and I made a day of it. Did you know that one of my cousins is a talented photographer? After the baby shower, Marissa and I made an obligatory stop at the Mall of America and ate dinner before heading home.

We arrived home last night to no Internet access. I was too tired to figure it out. This morning I unplugged and then plugged back in our Internet box and then restarted the computer. That seemed to do the trick! I will try to catch up on reading my friend’s blogs.

Wow- Sounds like a ‘doosey’ of a storm! Glad you are safe! We need rain here, badly. Everything is brown and dry and all of my flowers are almost dead. I pray we get rain (but hopefully not a storm like yours!)

My kids have been BEGGING to go to the Mall Of America. We used to go there quite often when my oldest 2 were little – We would go to “Toddler Tuesdays”. My DH would come over to the twin cities for business, and we would come with him. Now that we have 4 kids…we don’t all fit in the company rental car (or the hotel room!)-lol!

Maybe we’ll have to plan a ‘long weekend’ over there sometime this year! I’m all up for IKEA! ;-)

    Blessings,
    Michelle

Wow! Your cousin IS talented! I enjoyed looking all through her site at her photography. I wish I lived in the Twin Cities area – I would definitely keep her number handy!

A Tea Party sounds lovely and very stress-free.

I came home from our trip to a dead computer…not fun. Glad your’s was an easy fix. A day trip with your daughter sounds very sweet too.

I bet your ground is in prime condition to pull weeds!
Sounds like a lovely weekend, especially time with family. I hope your uncle was not hurt to badly by the fall.

Uncle… pride took a beating. He decided he would use his mother’s cane for the rest of the trip. Grandma brought a cane, but prefers her wheeled walker with a little seat for when she gets tired. He was quite embarrassed about uprooting one of the flowers in the bed along the house. I replanted it… we’ll see. It is an annual and doesn’t have long to live anyway. Besides, human bones are way more precious than flowers!

Oh my Granddaughters love tea and cucmber sandwiches except for the time someone served them made with mayonnaise instead of butter, (yuck) It sounds like you had a lovely time with your family. So glad your electric was restored and hooray for rain, boo for wind!

    Hi!
I’m thrilled that you enjoyed the cheeseball! I think it’s so yummy~ I could, honestly, sit and eat the whole thing! LOL
Your tea party sounds just fantastic~ so fun! My aunt and her girls had tea for the girls and I a few weeks ago~ they did serve 4 types of tea in fancy teapots~ but we didn’t have such fancy food! It was so fun, though.
Oh, the Mall of America! Gracie is playing Mall Tycoon as I type and keeps informing me how much I’d love to go there! Maybe someday…..

Heidi, I had been waiting for a chance to try this. I knew I would like it and knew that I could sit and eat the whole thing too. Anything with cream cheese in it goes automatically onto my “love it” list. My mom and sister will be up for the anniversary of my dad’s death. A number of my family are getting together somewhere… I think I will make another one for this get together.

We’re to the point where I think we’d go dance out in it if we had any. This has been one dry summer!

I like your tea party idea! Very clever!

Ooh, I love Eva Peron.. Evita I guess, not the woman herself..

So what you’re saying is that Marissa is a girly girl at heart.. We’ve been here 7 years and the boys have barely acknowledged the treehouse and swings.. the rest of the plastic toy stuff has been purchased since J and A arrived.. but the horses, barn, corral, and pasture have been where they’ve spent their time.

I’m putting up some pictures of a family walk in the pasture.. come back to take a look.
