I am sorry I went on a blogging break without previous notice. But, look what I have been doing! Marissa’s homeschool curriculum arrived this week. So, I had to arrange a bookshelf to store all her new stuff. If you look closely, you will see that this shelf actually houses two rows of books.
“I would be the most content if my children grew up to be the kind of people who think decorating consists mostly of building enough bookshelves” ~ Anna Quindlen
Now, some of you may think this is the height of nerdiness. Most of the people who consider me a friend know that owning a lot of books is a sign of a well organized mind. Actually, I am proudly, slightly nerdy though!
I won’t lie to you. Putting Marissa’s school books away didn’t take me all week. When I rearranged the shelf so that her books would fit on it, I dusted that shelf. I just can’t bring myself to put brand new books on an undusted shelf. I hadn’t planned on making a day of cleaning, but… I couldn’t dust just one shelf and leave the rest of the shelves undusted. When all the shelves were dusty, they still looked just fine because the dirt was undisturbed and evenly distributed. However, after cleaning one shelf, that one brilliantly clean spot made the nice even dust on the other shelves look, well, dirty! So, I took all the books off the shelves, dusted and then put them back. I was on a roll. The biggest, most tedious job was completed. Why stop?
I was raised by a crazy Scandinavian woman. She taught me that a room can’t be adequately or properly cleaned if there is furniture in it. With the exception of the bookcases which are too heavy to move and with Marissa’s help, I moved all the furniture from my living room into my dining room. Marissa was a champ. She only rolled her eyes once! With the furniture out of the room, I noticed that the wall needed washing badly. Several weeks ago, “I Don’t Know” ate in the living room and got something on the wall behind the keyboard. Marissa cleaned it off. If I stood at the correct angle, I could see a different sheen on the paint in the shape of a large circle. Next to the circle was Marissa’s handprints. I washed the walls.
Well, you all know that if your walls are clean, you have to shampoo your carpets! That was next. My poor cats! They don’t like the noise of the vacuum. The shampooer is just as loud. Then the carpets were wet. The furniture stayed in the dining room for the night. My male cat bellowed all through the night. With his favorite chair in the dining room filled with knick knacks, he was confused about where he might lay his head. Luckily, his world is back in order and he can sleep at night.
The next morning, Marissa and I moved all the furniture back into the living room. I used to own a carpet rake. Whenever I cleaned, I raked my way out of the room so that the carpet pile all faced the same way and there weren’t any footprints marring the surface of the freshly vacuumed room. I no longer own a carpet rake; I must have lost the rake in one of my military moves. Anyway, I was tempted to go out and purchase a carpet rake, but decided that would just be crazy! There really was no stopping at this point. Marissa and I moved on to the dining room.
The cleaning frenzy has not stopped. Why, I even organized my craft area! I have two more rooms in the basement (the master bedroom and the office) and the bathrooms to do and then the whole house will be ready to be closed up for the winter. It is cold, drizzly and dreary today. Perhaps, I am going to finish just in time. I am quite sure the leaves on the trees are not as green as they were at the beginning of the week…
My Mom is arriving in the cities this evening. I will be blogging-light during her stay. I don’t get to see her that often and wouldn’t want to spend all the time I had available to be with her on the computer… so in case I don’t get back tomorrow for Marissa Monday.
Here is a photo of Marissa taking a well deserved break.
She is watching a movie in the unfinished part of our basement.
It masquerades as our family room!

Wow! You have accomplished a ton this past week! Way to go! When you get done with your house, how ’bout a trip to mine? It could sure use an overhaul! You know, somedays I think I’d love to move just for the opportunity to start from scratch.
I hope you have a fantastic visit with your mom this week!

Have you heard of the book ” If you gave a mouse a cookie” ? Your cleaning project reminded me of that. One thing spring boarding to another. hee hee. I bet you are pleased now that it is clean. [0=
God Bless my SSiC and I look forward to hearing how your year goes. ((hugs))

I like that quote. I used to try to convince my mom that our myriad of bookshelves in the basement was good insulation in our “cold Yankee winters”.

See, this is precisely why I don’t dust. Dusting one little shelf turned into that huge project, and I just don’t have time for projects like that.
hee hee hee
Actually, we have been sorting through everything we own, cleaning, organizing, boxing things up — getting our house ready to sell.

I was raised by a crazy Scandinavian woman too. I showed her your post and she laughed. We can both relate.

I can so relate! I was hoping you had taken a last minute trip to pick up your kids…and that’s why you weren’t blogging! I’m still praying you get to go soon!

I suspected some of my positive thinking friends might be thinking just that… That is why I took the time to write an entry. I haven’t heard a thing. I don’t even know if the MOI interview has been completed. According to the Internet rumor mill there are 45 dossiers with completed MOI interviews that are still in MOI and no one has bothered taking them to immigrations. I haven’t heard a thing about the US Visa situation either.

WOW! I wish I would get that “inspired” to clean!!!
(My DH is part Norwegian…maybe that’s why he’s a neat freak – LOL!) Just curious…what is a carpet rake? It sounds like something we could definitely use!
Your bookshelves look great and I loved the quote underneath the photo!
I took your nerd quiz, too, and sad to say I am “lightly nerdy” ( My DH would argue that with you, however! He would say my nerdiness is much higher!)
I’m so sorry to hear that church hasn’t been fulfilling for you lately. Ours has been ‘hit or miss.” This past week just spoke to me (probably because I am such a worrier myself.) I know I just need to ‘let go’ and cast those anxieties on Him…but, easier said than done.
May I ask what type of church you go to? (If you don’t want to post it online, you can email me at foxvalleyfamily@aol.com) Something tells me we go to similar churches…
The church we attend now isn’t the church/ denomination I was raised in, but it’s what my DH was raised…and he is pretty adamant that that’s where we’ll stay. For the most part I agree with their teachings but there’s about 10% that makes me squirm.
Best wishes for you and Marissa starting out your new school year!

I am out of breath just reading it. You have been so busy and still found time to come say hi to me. I am honored!I would love a bookcase like that!
because of Jesus, Bobbie

Bobbie, The bookcase was bought unassembled and unfinished for quite a reasonable price. My husband picked up one every payday for… 4 consecutive paydays. He did all the assembly and most of the staining. He thought I was working too slow!

This is exactly why I’m dreading cleaning off the shelves above our computer…it will turn into a whole-room cleaning session! Never mind that it’s needed it for eons now…LOL.
Speaking of storing books, tomorrow we’ll be moving one bookcase into a corner, and in its place, next to my desk, will go a big storage cabinet *with doors* to store our school books and supplies (if it will all fit). I’ll be able to tie the handles together to keep Bethany out (hallelujah — no more messes!).
Enjoy your visit with your mom!

Hi, I’m also homeschooling kids with FASD (and a member of fashomed, which is how I found your blog!). I just wanted to stop in and say hi!!
.
I can relate to your week of cleaning. I clean when I’m stressed, so when my house is REALLY clean… things probably haven’t been going well! LOL

I do that too. I also clean to avoid some other responsibilities I have. When I was in grad school and I had a big assignment due, my house was sparkly!

Oh I loved this post – I know exactly what you mean about not being able to only dust one bookshelf. I’m the same way. But things look so nice when they are all dusted and re-organized.
Have a blessed day.

I am impressed with the amount of work you did to get Marissa’s books on the shelf. I joke that I cannot clean unless I make a bigger mess. I am going room by room, making larger messes so that I can have a clean room when I am done. UGH, you would think I would learn. The kids are having fun with it, we are rearranging most things and they like it, feels new to them when we do it.
I pray you have a splendid time with your mom. I am praying MOI is moving and your kids are home SOON.
God is good, always

You clean to avoid other responsibilities? I make up things to do and places to be so I don’t have to clean. I’ll write letters to long-lost friends, bake delicious desserts, cook big meals, go on walks with the kids, plan playdates — anything to avoid cleaning.

Oh, I can do that kind of thing too! But when I have something I should be doing and don’t want to. Something important… say like balancing my checkbook. If I were to write letters, bake, play, etc. I would feel guilty. I have to clean the house. Cleaning is responsible. So… everything gets real, real sparkly!
