Observation is the heart of science. Beverly and David are very interested in observing everything. I watch them and I compare them to young adults, many of whom think science is boring or too hard. I hope I can keep my kids interested in the world around them. They are too young to develop and test hypothesis, but they are enjoying science through their senses!
We are using the literature we read as a framework for what we learn. So far we have read:
“He’s got the moon and the stars in His hands,” ~ Kadir Nelson, “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands”
“But — chicka chicka boom boom! Look, there’s a full moon.” ~ Bill Martin, Jr. and John Archanbault, “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom “
“Goodnight moon.” ~ Margaret Wise Brown, “Goodnight Moon”
“Sleep in my eyes
And stars in the skies
Moon on my bed
And dreams in my head
That’s what I’ll wear tonight.” ~ Nancy White Carlstrom, “Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear?”Do you know that the Jewish people have their own calendar? Ever since we received the Torah at Mount Sinai we have always counted time in our own, special, Jewish way… the moon tells us the time of the Jewish months and when all the Jewish holidays arrive. ~ Yaffa Ganz, “Follow the Moon: A Journey Through the Jewish Year.”
So, we have been observing the moon. And, Beverly and David are avid moon watchers. This is what I have done with the kids:

Guess who got the coolest parent award? If there is any doubt in your mind, it wasn’t me!

How cool! And I give you both the coolest parent award, although I can see why the kids thought the telescope won out.

The big winners here are your kids. You amaze me. ~Kari

Wait. The TELESCOPE was the coolest parent? LOL.
I’m glad you’re catching up on things and visiting. Been wondering how you’ve been. ;]

Julie,
How fun! ( and you’re still a cool mama!)
Sorry I haven’t been commenting as much lately. I’m still reading, but we’ve been so busy ( and sick, too) that I’ve just been keeping up on blogs via Google reader.
The projects that you are doing with the little ones look awesome! We haven’t had a chance to do any FIAR this year – and I think I’m going through withdrawals – lol! (We are enjoying MFW and Little Hands to Heaven an awful lot, though!)
God Bless,
Michelle

oh how wonderful! We sold our telescope a while ago and now that the kids are “of interested” age, I wish we hadn’t!
Great post.

That is one cool telescope! Looks like a whole lot of fun.
Just stopping in to say hello to another homeschooling mama! Have a great weekend!

That’s Amore!
How cool. My kids were avid moon watchers too. When Heather was very small (under two) walking and rocking her out under the moon always calmed her heart.
My favorite moon song is Somewhere out there from An American Tail
Somewhere out there
Beneath the pale moonlight
Someone’s thinking of me
And loving me tonight
It was the song my kids sang to each other when Heather was away in Israel. )0: AWE they grow up so fast!
I haven’t even gone to blogger and when I do, I wait like you do too.
How come moms always get the bright ideas and dads always get the credit?
because of Jesus, Bobbie

I see the moon
And the moon sees me
The moon sees the one
Who I want to see
We’ve had a big, bright moon these last few days and my 6 year old is entranced. I wish I knew how to use our telescope. Could I borrow a cool parent for a moment?
I wanted to comment on your statement about your “family crumbling” [four frame post]. The adoption is still so fresh. That’s a big change, even for a teen who processes things typically. I expect it would be a tough year of transitions for everyone. God brought the blessings, He will sustain.
One more thing, a question – You’ve mentioned many Messianic/Hebrew Roots things. Does it offend you when I spell the full letters of God? I will stop if it does.
My Reply:
Bobbie-Jo, I am not offended at all. I have written before that I am not Jewish and do not consider myself Messianic. I am just a Christian who loves the Old Testament and finds the “liturgical calendar” outlined in Leviticus 23 to be about the best way to talk to my kids frequently about the spiritual truths found in scripture. I generally spell the entire name of God too.
