Hair and Such

17 February 2009 · 7 Comments

Two weeks ago I struggled to get Beverly’s hair just right. I put cornrows in the front and back. I had been able to kind of do the techniques used in cornrowing, but I couldn’t do long sections. I brought too much hair into the braid and ran out of hair long before I ran out of row. I have been doing Beverly’s hair every 1-2 weeks ever since May. I have a little more skill then I had nine months ago. And, Beverly’s hair has grown almost 2-1/2 inches. I was pleased with the results. I had conquered cornrows.

Mama conquered cornrows!

This hair-do lasted 2-weeks! But, all good things must come to an end. One morning I spent nearly forever taking out all the beads and picking out the braids. We dentangled, washed and conditioned, oiled her scalp; we were several hours into our day and her hair still was undone. Beverly was losing patience. I was too.

The BEST hair you've ever done!
Mommy! This is the best hair you’ve ever done!

Now, every morning I am having to comb out her afro-puffs. I am ready to spend a couple of hours doing braids. Beverly remains content to have her hair combed out everyday.

I have gotten a lot of people coming to my site looking for hair-do ideas. I am not a hair care expert. But, for those who, like me, are still in the learning phase. Here is what I have learned so far.

Styling products I can’t do without – (1) pin tail comb for picking out braids (2) rat tail comb for making parts (3) a wide tooth comb for combing out the hair (4) a really wide tooth comb for combing conditioner through the hair on wash day (5) plenty of duck-billed clips (6) a hair color applicator brush for oiling scalp (7) a very scant amount of oil for the scalp (8 ) spray bottle with water and a little more oil for keeping the hair wet when I am actually braiding it and for taming bed head daily (9) a very patient little girl.

And, (10) Katelynylyn vlog. She has a lot of videos with ideas that are simply stunning, even if they are not always simple. Here is a sample. The back of Beverly’s hair was parted into boxes and twisted for much of the time it has been growing. It was the simplest thing to do with her short hair.

I am still trying different shampoos, conditioners and gels so I won’t even try to make any recommendations.I suspect that what works for one person doesn’t work for everyone and what works today may not work in a couple of months.

Oh, and you need lots and lots of beads, snaps, ballies and bling. Beverly doesn’t think she is “done” unless she is decorated.

She looks adorable with both styles!

Do you use a satin pillowcase? My partner, especially after we started her locs, decided she likes that much better than sleeping with a scarf on and it definitely helps keep her hair from getting as fuzzy and mussed at night. I just wish she were as patient as Beverly!

    My Response:

Beverly and David both use satin pillowcases. I tried wrapping Beverly’s hair in a satin scarf. Beverly loved it! She proclaimed she looked like a, “Madam.” (Which is apparently an old, married lady in Creole.) But, by morning the scarf was gone. I switched David to a satin pillowcase that zips because he wouldn’t keep his pillowcase on his pillow.

She is SO pretty! ( and you do a great job with her hair!) Got any ideas on what to do with LONG stick-straight/baby-fine hair? I need help with MY Julie’s hair!

Oh – Wow. She looks very adorable in both. But I had no idea it was such a production!

Thank you for leaving a comment on my blog. Your daughter’s hair looks great! I hope you are able to find something that works well on your one child’s dry skin.

That is exactly what I’m planning to do with Keziah’s hair when we have a couple of hours to get it done. I hate it when she wants a “ballerina” or “Mickeys” because that means that the morning hair comb out is upon us and she hates that worse than anything.
