In Deuteronomy 6:7, parents are exhorted to teach their children diligently. The Hebrew word that is translated teach diligently is shanan and actually means to whet or sharpen or to be pierced. Shanan Conservatary exists to sharpen the minds of parents and children with the truth of God’s word. Piercing their hearts with the Shema blessing, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”
A conservatory is both a:
School of Art: Where we teach the art of living well ~ in obedience to the authority of God’s absolute truths.
Greenhouse: A controlled environment that protects, nurtures and promotes growth.
Shanan High School operates as a division of Shanan Conservatory.
Our Scope and Sequence
Relationship: We seek to build spiritual passion, obedience and the heart of a servant in our children by spending the first part of our day working on our relationship with each other and God. Because we believe that our children will learn to be good citizens of the greater community by being good family members, we model appropriate family and interpersonal relationships for our children. We teach our children how to work as a team and how to resolve conflicts. We spend some time every week serving others. We ensure that our children remain connected to our community.
Readiness: We prepare our children for becoming adults. We seek to build self-discipline and responsibility in each family member by working together to learn how to be good stewards of our time, talents, treasures and material things. Mathematic reasoning is an important life skill. At a minimum, we will strive to teach each child mathematic reasoning in order that he or she can successfully complete a course in consumer math.
Reasoning: “If you can’t write clearly, speak articulately and think logically – you have lost control of your own life” (Sadie Delany, The Delany Sisters’ Book of Everyday Wisdom). We assume a Biblical worldview. We seek to teach our children to understand the world around them through observable, measurable, testable and repeatable phenomena. It is our belief that neither creation nor evolution can be supported with the scientific process; therefore, both fall into the realm of worldview and philosphy. We teach history as a meaningful sequence of events that is predetermined by God and being sovereignly worked out to fulfill God’s ultimate goal. It is our goal that each child is equipped to critically examine the worldview and the presuppositions of the culture in which they live.
Relaxation: We teach our children to wisely use their free time to develop their individual talents, pursue their passions, exercise their body’s and renew their spirits.
